Bill Corbett

1919 – 2014

William Owen Roberts Corbett was born on the Southside of Edmonton on October 5, 1919 to William and Sephorah Roberts. When his dad died in an Edmonton coal mine accident in 1925, Bill and three brothers were put in an orphanage until Leonard Corbett married Sephorah, and they had six more children. After working as a caddie at Calgary Golf & Country Club, and as a farm labourer south of Calgary in his teens, Bill joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served through World War II in England, Scotland, Belgium, Holland, France & Germany and was decorated by Canada and recently by France. After the war, he joined Ford Motor Company and worked with Ford in Calgary and then Edmonton until his retirement. Bill married Elsie Venus in 1946, and they had two children, Billy and Linda, who he raised as a single parent in Mayfield. In 1975, Bill married Bev Carlyle, who was raising her four children, Sheila, Lee, Kathy and Terry. Bill and Bev enjoyed ¬working in their garden and being active in the Legion. Bill was a keen golfer and part of the “rook gang” at Victoria Golf Club where he had a couple of aces and much camaraderie. After golf and curling days passed, along with Bev’s health, they moved to Terra Losa Lifestyles, where Bill was wonderfully taken care of until his death on June 4. He was predeceased by his parents, eight of his siblings, and granddaughter Lindsey. Surviving Bill are brother Len; son Bill (Charlene) Corbett of Kelowna; daughter Linda (Lee) Carlyle of Edmonton; Sheila (Al) MacMillan, Kathy (Mike) Langlois, and Terry (Joanne) Carlyle; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His humour, compassion, zeal and positive outlook will be much missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 21st at McClure United Church (13708-74 St NW) with a lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CNIB or the Salvation Army.
