HOWITT, Robert Worley, passed away unexpectedly (or as he would say went “Tits up”) in his home on March 10, 2017 at the age of 65.

Robert is survived by his wife, Joann Howitt (Stevens); his children, R. Brodie Howitt (Melissa), Katelynd J Howitt (Brandon), grandchildren Noah, Leo and Eva, as well as his sisters; Katherine Jane and Ann Penney and nephew Trevor Penney. Robert was predeceased by the family cats, Big Puss and Little Puss and the family dog, Copper aka Dog.

Robert was born in Ottawa, Ontario to Robert Brodie Howitt and Bernice Margaret Howitt (Worley). He graduated from the University of Guelph in 1976 with an honors degree in the Bachelors of Science program specializing in Earth Science. Additionally, while working at the Alberta Research Council Robert attended the University of Alberta. There he graduated with a Masters and PhD in soil sciences.

In August of 1977 in Ottawa, Ontario he married Joann, a small town gal with big city dreams and a gleam in her eye for the red bearded Scotsman. They later migrated to Alberta to follow post-secondary aspirations. A place they thought to stay only briefly became their home for over 35 years. Building a life in the highly conservative, highly religious town of Edmonton, the hippie couple fledged out a life that only dreams are made of… two TV’s; one for sound and the other for picture, and a rusty bicycle and workshop vice as Christmas gifts to his wife. There was macramé crafting, and rabbit hunting expeditions that one enjoyed and the other lovingly endured hand in hand. On August 19, 1980 he welcomed his first born son (Oopsie!), Brodie in to the world and later on May 5, 1983, his daughter Katelynd (stinky- schnidaro), who were the dearest to his heart. Baaazing!!

Robert was an avid cyclist. His children often recall him walking around the house many mornings before work in bicycle shorts that left nothing to the imagination and his little fancy shoes with a coffee in hand. Every night he would make it home to cook “Moose Poop Pie” and watch hockey night in Canada. Wood working was another passion that he followed throughout most of his adult life and left many little treasures that can still be found today. The exciting sport of Darts has always captured the attention of Robert. He even convinced his son that it was far better than hockey and together they played in darts tournaments and watched the exciting play by play’s over the years. Above all was the family cottage. A place where even the most hard hearted would soften and smile and the most fun loving could let loose. And let loose Robert did…with family at his side.

Robert was cremated on March 21, 2017. No funeral services are to be held.

Our hope is that you read this and remember the man who may have been in your life at some time and in some way, and we hope you reminisce with fondness and laughter.
